A recent survey of car parking spaces in Ireland by Semperit has shown that a considerable number of car parking spaces are narrower than is recommended by guidelines. It is directed that car parking spaces are 2.4m wide by guidelines published by the Dublin County Council, but in 20 of the most popular car parks in Ireland, 19% of spaces failed to reach the minimum 2.4meters wide.
"These results confirm what most motorists would say about the everyday experience of parking the car - it's often very difficult to find a space with enough room for you and your passengers to exit comfortably from the car." - Paddy Murphy - Semperit
While these figures may be expected, the average family car measures 1.8meters wide, and poor car park design combined with narrow spaces can leave little room for maneuver. Larger cars such as SUVs can measure significantly wider.
