There are few car manufacturers whose name garners as much respect as Volkswagen. Since the first Beetles were shipped to Ireland in 1950, Volkswagens have been an ever-present on Irish roads.
It is a sign of the quality of Volkswagen cars that that same model of Beetle is still a common sight here in Ireland and all over the world. Of course a lot has changed since then, but Volkswagen are still regarded as one of the most reliable cars you can buy.
The Beetle's direct replacement in 1975, the Golf, is still a best-seller today, though it has gone through a number of transformations down the years. The latest sixth generation was declared World Car of the Year for 2009. And Volkswagen has added a few more favourites to its ever-growing family that now covers every class of car.
Volkswagen's smallest and cheapest offering is the Fox, a relatively spacious city car with a good-sized engine. Far more popular, however, is the Volkswagen Polo. This 'small car' is hugely popular in Ireland because of its affordability and reliability.
Next comes the multi award-winning Golf, which also comes in GTI, R32 and Golf Plus styles. This has been one of the biggest-selling cars in the country for a long time and remains so today.
Volkswagen's saloon offering is the Passat, another name that has been around for three decades or so. While the Passats of recent years carry on the tradition of excellent reliability, they have also developed a style and sharp appearance that may have not been previously with the Volkswagen brand.
Indeed, the Volkswagens of today appeal to people of all ages and from all walks of life. Take, for example, the new Beetle which has a distinctive style of its own. The Touran and Sharan areĀ Volkswagen's MPV offerings, while it competes well in the SUV market with the Touareg and Tiguan.
When it comes to reliability and quality, there are few manufacturers that can match Volkswagen's reputation.
